This Opportunity is with the Epidemiology Workforce Branch (EWB) in the Division for Scientific Education and Professional Development (DSEPD) at the Centers for disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Division’s mission is to improve health outcomes through a competent, sustainable, and empowered public health workforce. EWB provides applied epidemiology training and service programs for future public health professionals and the existing workforce. Programs include the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS), Laboratory Leadership Service Fellowship (LLS), and Student Programs, including the Epidemiology Elective Program (EEP) and the Science Ambassador (SA) Fellowship.
Student Programs (2 Opportunities)
Two Opportunities are available within Student Programs. The ORISE participants can expect to gain (1) experience in coordinating and managing multiple activities that bridge public health and education, (2) an in-depth understanding of how to teach the basic concepts of epidemiology and public health to a variety of audiences, and (3) broad exposure to the various offices and programs across CDC. The participants will be involved in program coordination and curriculum development and training tasks for the EEP and the SA Fellowship. Both programs will be involved with subject matter experts across the agency to incorporate a spectrum of public health topics addressed at CDC. Activities will be divided according to Participant's interest and skills.
The EEP introduces medical and veterinary students to applied epidemiology, public health, and global health through hands-on experience and mentorship by CDC subject matter experts. This program offers 6- or 8-week rotations largely based at CDC in Atlanta, Georgia. The SA Fellowship is a dynamic, educational program offered by CDC for teachers and educational leaders interested in bringing public health sciences into middle- and high-school classrooms. This competitive SA Fellowship includes a 5-day interactive summer course at CDC headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, and a 1-year distance-based professional development opportunity.
The ORISE Research Participation program coordination activities may include (1) recruitment: developing marketing strategies (e.g., social media, website design) and public relations activities (e.g., partnership outreach), (2) selection: supporting application review, compiling and analyzing score data, and facilitating host site placement, (3) tracking: providing technical support to host sites and program participants, and (4) evaluation: designing survey instruments, implementing evaluation plans, assessing program impact (e.g. data analysis), and reporting results. Curriculum development and training activities may include: (1) designing training agendas; (2) developing and teaching training case studies, sessions, and activities using evidence-based curriculum design and teaching strategies; (3) consulting with CDC subject matter experts from across the agency to design training sessions; (4) reviewing, co-authoring, and publishing cross-cutting activities and lesson plans.
The ORISE Research Participants will also be given the opportunity to participate in HHS and CDC training programs, including learning activities with the Epidemic Intelligence Service, and will be expected to attend technical seminars and presentations held throughout the opportunity period.
Fellowship and Response Support Team (1 Position)
One opportunity is available to support the Fellowship and Response Support Team (FRST) in EWB. The team’s mission is to support EIS Officers and supervisors in field and CDC headquarters assignments and to coordinate EIS Officer and LLS Participant's involvement in CDC’s emergency response activities, including Epi-Aids and Lab-Aids. The participant can expect to gain experience in project management, data management and reporting, and emergency response coordination. The participant will also gain broad exposure to the various offices and programs across CDC.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
The applicant should have a masters degree in public health or a related field.
Student Program Positions (2 positions)
The participants should expect to be involved independently as well as collaboratively with a team. The participants should have excellent written and verbal communication skills as this opportunity will involve significant amounts of writing and public speaking. The participants should have strong organizational skills. Preferred skills include: 1-2 years of knowledge and involvement in curriculum design and/or teaching, and experience with Excel.
Fellowship and Response Support Team (1 Position)
The participant should expect to be involved independently as well as collaboratively with a team. The participant should have excellent written and verbal communication skills. The participant should have strong organizational skills and the ability to manage large amounts of information in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. Preferred skills include: 1–2 years of knowledge and involvement in data management and experience with Excel and SharePoint.
