There is a fellowship opportunity at the Center for Surveillance, Epidemiology, and Laboratory Services (CSELS) in the Division of Public Health Information Dissemination (DPHID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Division of Public Health Information Dissemination (DPHID) focuses on creating and promoting quality, timely and useful cross-cutting scientific products and services in order to strengthen the science of public health, and ultimately to improve public health decision-making.

The ideal candidate will serve as an Evaluation Fellow that will be engaged in current evaluation projects across DPHID. The candidate will be involved in a variety of projects across branch teams and Division leadership to improve program delivery.

The fellow has the opportunity to be involved in the following activities:

• Ensuring evaluation activities are based on accepted theory, principles, methods, and practices.
• Planning, coordinating and evaluating public health program(s), projects, and/or activities.
• Developing and refining logic models, strategic plans, and performance measures.
• Developing tools/instruments and systems to collect process and outcome data on an ongoing basis, including quantitative and qualitative instruments to be administered to CDC staff.
• Using complex qualitative and quantitative methods required to assess short, medium, and long term measures.
• Providing data analysis and developing reports, presenting data to DPHID, CSELS, CDC leadership.
• Giving technical assistance to internal and external groups concerning program evaluation.
• Supporting subject matter experts to plan, develop, implement, and evaluate informational and educational materials intended to reach broad national audiences.
• Assisting with developing and maintaining initiatives to improve public health programs.
• Communicating with diverse individuals and groups at all levels.
• Assisting staff in using results to inform and enhance program operations.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for four years, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.


Candidates should have a Masters in Public Health, Doctorate in Public Health, or PhD within the last five years. 

Interested and qualified applicants should possess a strong mastery of public health techniques, methods, practices, research and techniques:

  • Evaluation principles, analytic methods, strong organization and coordination skills, and interpersonal relations practices.  
  • Candidates should have working knowledge of public health, program evaluation, data collection methods and analysis skills of primary and secondary data sources. Strong candidates will have demonstrated experience implementing program evaluation activities and utilizing complex quantitative and/or qualitative methods.
