Description

A research opportunity is currently available with the Policy, Planning, Evaluation, and Communication team (PPEC), within the Division of Emergency Operations (DEO) in the Center for Preparedness and Response (CPR) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. 

Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will have the opportunity to be involved in the following activities:

  • Policy:  Learn how to collect and analyze DEO’s public health emergency preparedness policies; learn about CDC’s new graduated response framework with the opportunity to observe leaders and contribute to activities; observe the development of partnerships with non-governmental and private sector stakeholders; and, respond to requests for information
  • Planning:  Learn how we maintain CDC’s emergency management accreditation, including reviewing and maintaining emergency plans and procedures, and ensure strategic priorities are imbedded within the emergency management planning process at the appropriate times
  • Evaluation:  Learn and contribute to the process of developing, editing, and disseminating the division’s weekly report to division staff.  The report highlights progress, milestones, plans, and updates within each branch and team, and for decision-making purposes. Learn and participate in the Center for Preparedness and Response Metrics Project, which will include the tracking and reporting on Division metrics.
  • Communication: Learn how to develop emergency preparedness communications products and activities, which may include division website; fact sheets; success stories; newsletter; campaigns; and articles. The participant will also have the opportunity to contribute to data visualization tool development/reviews, etc.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: February 3, 2020

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
