CDC Office and Location: A fellowship opportunity is available in the Emergency Response and Recovery Branch (ERRB) with the Maternal, Newborn and Reproductive Health (MNRH) group within the Center for Global Health (CGH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia. 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

Research Project: The ORISE fellow will develop programmatic and epidemiological skills related to maternal, newborn, and reproductive health in humanitarian settings. The fellow will assist with the development of programmatic and research agendas, writing protocols, development of monitoring and evaluation tools, data analysis, publication of results and additional support as needed for the activities of the MNRH group. The fellow may have an opportunity to travel internationally and collaborate with country partners on project implementation in countries affected by humanitarian crises.

Learning Objectives: Under the supervision of MNRH unit, the ORISE fellow will have an opportunity to:

  • Collaborate with MNRH to develop standardized tools and training materials to support current and future work in surveillance, monitoring and evaluation, and response;
  • Support report and peer-reviewed manuscript writing and presentations for technical and non-technical audiences related to current and future MNRH projects;
  • Build and apply skills in data management, analysis and visualization to data sets from current and future projects using software such as SAS, R, Tableau, or PowerBI;
  • Support development of research protocols and standard operating procedures, including submitting products to CDC e-clearance
  • Travel to humanitarian settings with supervisor to collaborate with partners on programmatic and operational research projects;
  • Participate in global working groups, such as the Inter-agency Working Group for Reproductive Health in Crises;
  • Provide support to branch, division and agency emergency response efforts as able.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: June 6, 2022.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment LengthThe appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of ParticipationThe appointment is full-time.

Participant StipendThe participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

Citizenship RequirementsThis opportunity is available to U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR).

ORISE InformationThis program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields (e.g. Public Health, Epidemiology). Degree must have been received within the past five years.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience working internationally
  • Knowledge of program planning, monitoring and evaluation, epidemiology, and/or data analysis 
  • Interest in the field of maternal, newborn and sexual reproductive health
  • Able and willing to travel internationally and conduct research in countries affected by humanitarian emergencies
  • Fluency in English
  • Proficiency in French
