CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available within the Parasitic Diseases Branch (PDB), Division of Parasitic Diseases and Malaria (DPDM) of the Center for Global Health (CGH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.

PDB has a critical role in CDC’s overall public health mission and it is imperative that all scientific activities performed in PDB are of the highest scientific quality. PDB’s laboratory quality management system (LQMS) provides a framework to structure all laboratory workflow processes and to ensure that the scientific outputs align with CDC’s guiding principle to produce the highest quality of laboratory science.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same. Within CDC, the mission of the Parasitic Diseases Branch (PDB) is to prevent and control parasitic diseases in the United States and globally. Parasitic infections cause a tremendous burden of disease in both the tropics and subtropics as well as in more temperate climates.

Research Project: PDB is seeking a full-time Laboratory Quality Assurance fellow to join the PDB Laboratory Quality Activity.  The fellow will train with the quality team to support laboratory activities. This includes working under the guidance of senior leadership in monitoring quality processes, identifying risks and opportunities for improvement, and ensuring compliance with the established policies and regulatory requirements.

Learning Objectives: The ORISE/CDC fellow will have the opportunity to be involved in the following activities:

  • Train in the development, maintenance, and continual improvements of a LQMS
  • Train in developing, maintaining, and revising policies and procedures to support the LQMS
  • Train in conducting laboratory risk assessments and gap analyses
  • Train in identifying areas of improvement in the laboratories and the implementation of appropriate preventive and corrective actions
  • Train in the implementation and integration of the new quality tools to support all functions of the laboratories
  • Utilize basic statistical tools and techniques to gather and analyze quality data
  • Participate in relevant committees, meetings, evaluations, and trainings
  • Collaborate with CDC colleagues to complete other duties as assigned
