CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available within the Parasitic Diseases Branch (PDB), Division of Parasitic Diseases and Malaria (DPDM) of the Center for Global Health (CGH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same. This fellowship is in the Division of Parasitic Diseases within the Center for Global Health.

Research Project: Parasitic diseases are still important domestic problems in the U.S., where U.S. citizens become infected either when travelling abroad or within the country. PDB is responsible for conducting surveillance and outbreak investigations for reportable parasitic diseases. As part of the institutional mission, the Parasitic Diseases Branch has been conducting epidemiological and genotyping work on cyclosporiasis, a food borne parasitic disease that has caused yearly seasonal outbreaks. Under the guidance of a mentor, the Fellow will participate in epidemiological and genotyping methods to elucidate seasonal outbreaks of cyclosporiasis.  

Learning Objectives: The participant will also be trained in the following activities:

• Conducting an analysis of 2018-2021 genotyping cyclosporiasis data to compare epidemiologic data from cases identified as part of temporo-genetic clusters to those identified as part of larger genetic clusters.
• Complying with procedures to maintain and improve on the Quality Management System (QMS) to ensure compliance with CDC guidelines and federal regulations concerning laboratory diagnostic testing on human patients (CLIA).
• Data management and epidemiological analyses of molecular and epidemiologic data.
• Following all standard operating procedures and safety measures for CDC.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: May 2022.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.

Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields (e.g. Epidemiology, Public Health), or be currently pursuing the degree with completion by the end of May 2022.

Preferred skills:

• Proficiency in database management from epidemiological or clinical studies
• Proficiency in statistical analysis programs, such as SAS or R
• Proven good oral and written communication skills
• Prior experience working in clinical or surveillance studies
• Prior experience in data analyses
