The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

CDC has been working around the world for more than 60 years. CDC has unique expertise in using public health data to inform decisions, building public health laboratory capacity, developing a strong public health workforce, and establishing systems for emergency operations and response. In addition, CDC has deep technical expertise in disease-specific areas, operational research, implementation and evaluation of public health programs, and provision of technical assistance to Ministries of Health (MOHs), other public health institutions, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and private sector industries.

As part of OPTT’s workforce development efforts, the team manages three global health fellowship pathway programs (e.g., International Exchange and Technical Assistance [IETA], Headquarters Exchange and Technical Assistance [HETA], and Public Health Institutes/CDC Global Health Fellowship Program) and coordinates and delivers training and professional skills development opportunities for more than 3,000 staff stationed in 60 countries around the world.
