CDC Office and Location: A fellowship is available with the Global Immunization Division (GID) within the Center for Global Health (CGH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia. This is an exciting opportunity to help strengthen and support the global immunization workforce with CDC.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.  CDC’s GID is involved in one of the most effective of all global public health missions – vaccination against deadly diseases – which saves the lives of 2 to 3 million people every year. Based in Atlanta, GA, GID works closely with a wide variety of partners to protect global citizens against contagious and life-threatening vaccine-preventable diseases. 

This fellowship will be in GID’s Workforce Development Team (WDT). WDT’s mission is to achieve immunization goals by developing and strengthening the global public health workforce. The team focuses on assisting global partner organizations, national immunization programs, and other teams within GID to assess, design, develop, evaluate, and scale up interventions aimed at improving the effectiveness of the immunization workforce. Additionally, the team conducts operational research on immunization workforce development-related topics and support development of methodologies, tools, processes, and resources for immunization workforce capacity strengthening.

Research Project: WDT is currently involved in several cross-cutting projects to identify evidence-based approaches and strategies to improve immunization workforce capacity and performance, support low and middle-income countries in planning for implementation of COVID-19 vaccine rollout, and establish a comprehensive life course approach to immunization in priority countries.

Under the guidance of a mentor, the fellow will have the opportunity to:

• Collaborate on operational research, monitoring, and evaluation projects to identify and disseminate best practices related to supportive supervision, immunization workforce performance improvement, and other workforce development interventions.
• Conduct qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods data analysis
• Conduct relevant landscape analyses and reviews of literature
• Support a baseline needs assessment in one or two priority countries to identify country needs and capacity prior to the design and implementation of strategies
• Collaborate across the division and branch, to provide technical support to field and non-field-based activities related to vaccine preventable diseases and/or general global immunization activities.
• Present his/her research at the branch and division level, submit abstract(s) to conferences, and potentially serve as co-author on manuscript(s).

• Strengthen quantitative and qualitative data analytic skills
• Develop or strengthen practice-based knowledge and skills in human performance improvement, continuous quality improvement, and workforce development
• Contribute to the development and implementation of strategies and analytic solutions to strengthen or establish a life course approach to immunization, strengthen workforce performance, address workforce performance needs/issues, and improve access to immunization workforce data at different health levels in low- and middle- income countries
• Participate in the development and implementation of monitoring and evaluation (M&E) activities,
• Use M & E data to interpret and report data within CDC and to CDC partners or Ministries of Health
• Contribute to workforce development capacity building activities in low- and middle- income countries
• Strengthen oral and written communication
• Gain insights into global public health systems, along with the organization and management of complex programmatic data

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: May 2022.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.

Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The qualified candidate should have received a master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing one of the degrees with completion by the end of May 2022. Degree must have been received within the past five years.

Please note below are preferred skills, however, a candidate will not be excluded from consideration for not meeting one or more of these skills. There will be opportunities to acquire or strengthen these preferred skills as part of the fellowship experience.

Preferred skills:

• Training and/or experience in behavioral sciences, human performance improvement, organizational effectiveness, systems thinking, and/or process improvement  
• Training and/or experience in qualitative or quantitative research methods, data management and analysis using a major analytical and data visualization software (e.g., MAXQDA, NVIVO, R, Power BI, Tableau, GIS, etc.),   
• Training and/or experience in protocol development, operations research and evaluation methods
• Training or Experience in, health education, instructional design, adult learning
• Experience with public health programs in low resource settings
• Good communication skills and the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment
• Foreign language skills with fluency in Spanish and/or French

• Degree: Master's Degree or Doctoral Degree received within the last 60 months or anticipated to be received by 5/31/2022 11:59:00 PM.
