CDC Office and LocationAn exciting fellowship opportunity is currently available as part of the Emergency Response Capacity Team (ERCT), within the Center for Global Health (CGH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia. ERCT is composed of public health emergency response subject matter experts with scientific, technical, and operational experience in strengthening emergency response systems and training public health professionals. ERCT is currently providing technical support in strengthening public health emergency response systems in more than 20 countries in Africa, Latin America and Caribbean, East Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East.

Research Project: Under the guidance of subject matter experts and the assigned mentor, the fellow will receive formal training on a diversity of international emergency response topics and project management including:

  • Global health and international emergency response frameworks
  • Emergency management and emergency response
  • Global stakeholders and actors
  • Approaches to strategic and operational planning related to public health priorities
  • Project management as it applies to emergency response capacity building initiatives
  • Cultural diplomacy
  • International monitoring and evaluation frameworks

Under the mentorship of various subject matters at the agency, the fellow will participate in and receive hands-on training through the following activities:

  • Tracking and maintaining engagement with countries and partners
  • Monitoring project completion and its alignment with global indicators
  • Ensuring alignment of projects and country support with the ERCT’s standard approaches
  • Organizing project related materials including budgets, proposals, technical documents, media, presentations, assessments, and time tracking
  • Streamlining day-to-day project operations

Learning ObjectivesIn this opportunity, the fellow will gain hands-on experience in global health project management and operations. Under the mentorship of ERCT’s leadership, the participant will learn the critical components of running an effective global health program including internal management, strategic planning and international operational frameworks. The opportunity also includes coordinating with and supporting multiple global external partners and ministries of health across different regions globally.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: April 2022.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment LengthThe appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of ParticipationThe appointment is full-time.

Participant StipendThe participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

Citizenship RequirementsThis opportunity is available to U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR) only.

ORISE InformationThis program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing the degree with completion by the end of June 2022. Degree must have been received within the past five years.

Preferred Skills:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational and computer skills
  • Experience in or knowledge of issues in public health preparedness and response
  • International working experience in public health emergency preparedness and response
  • Proficiency in other languages (for example: Arabic, French, Portuguese, Russian or Spanish)

  • Degree: Master's Degree received within the last 60 months or anticipated to be received by 6/30/2022 11:59:00 PM.
