Description

A research opportunity is currently available with the Field Epidemiology Training Programs (FETP) team, with the Workforce Institute and Development Branch (WIDB), Division of Global Health Protection (DGHP) within the Center for Global Health (CGH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.

Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will be involved in four main projects:

  • Refining and overseeing systems to monitor and track the progress of existing programs and implementation of new tiers of FETP
  • Generating and communicating success stories from within the FETP team and with the Evaluation, Policy, Innovation and Communication (EPIC) Team, and up to and from the division
  • Supporting a collaborative project with the World Health Organization (WHO) to incorporate the field epidemiology occupation category into National Health workforce accounts, part of the WHO Health Workforce Strategy 2030. This project will include facilitating and documenting meetings with WHO partners and developing a project monitoring plan.
  • Special projects in information gathering and analysis (for the branch, team, cross team or specific FETP country program) and helping to coordinate, outline, and monitor team strategy

The participant will receive an introductory training and orientation to WIDB and FETP. The participant will: 

  • Participate in periodic calls with select country program staff to monitor program progress
  • Collaborate with headquarters and field staff and trainees to collect stories and review communications for various modes of publication and delivery- print, online and oral
  • Coordinate with EPIC's Monitoring and Evaluation Unit to update the FETP info dashboard and contribute to reporting of the progress of the country programs
  • Possibly travel to countries to be involved with FETP data and communications activities

The participant will also participate in Branch, team and special-interest groups for implementing FETP. S/he will be involved in the following activities:

  • Biweekly WIDB and FETP team meetings
  • Weekly Epidemiology Unit and/or Program Management Unit meetings
  • Routine monthly meetings on special topics (e.g. collaboration with President's Malaria Initiative)
  • Other appropriate FETP related activities

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: Summer 2021; start date is flexible

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing the degree with completion by the end of May 2021. Degree must have been received within the past five years.

Preferred skills:

  • Fluency in one or more foreign languages
  • Proven/strong writing and oral communication skills
  • Some inter-cultural experience and familiarity with the either Asian, Middle Eastern or African contexts
  • Quantitative data analysis skills
