A research fellowship is available within the Division of Global Health Protection (DGHP) of the Center for Global Health (CGH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia. CDC is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
Throughout the course of this fellowship, the participant will be trained to assist in research projects and activities in the domains of applied research, strategy, research best practices, monitoring, evaluation, and quantitative and qualitative research methods related to global health security activities and priorities for DGHP. Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will receive training on performance measurement and evaluation, applied research, developing research agendas, data analysis and preparing and writing abstracts and/or manuscripts across a wide range of global health security issues.
Anticipated Appointment Start Date: Spring 2021
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

- Excellent oral and written communication skills and strong ability to communicate across different management levels and with a variety of different audiences
- Strong problem solving skills
- Strong quantitative and qualitative analytic skills
- Strong data visualization skills
- Proficiency in statistical and/or qualitative software packages (e.g., SAS, SPSS, STATA, R)/Atlas/MAXQDA/Excel/Access)
- Detail oriented with significant emphasis on the quality of work
- Strong ability to work well within tight deadlines and changing priorities and in a fast paced environment
- Strong interpersonal skills to develop, foster and maintain cooperative relationships internal and external to CDC
- Prior experience in the fields of global health and public health
