A fellowship opportunity is available in the Division of Parasitic Diseases and Malaria (DPDM) within the Center for Global Health (CGH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

This project is a training program for an individual ORISE fellow to become highly competent in the development of novel of Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and next generation sequencing based diagnostics for parasitic diseases. The fellow will be trained at post-doctoral level in the development of bioinformatic pipelines, graphical user interfaces and minor software development for use in novel diagnostic tools. The fellow will learn and apply several methods of DNA extraction for molecular parasitology. The fellow will also be trained at post-doctoral level in the theory, development, use and troubleshooting of diagnostic PCR tests for parasitic pathogens. The fellow will be trained development troubleshooting of next generation sequencing library preparation and Illumina MiSeq sequencing for targeted amplicon sequencing. The fellow will learn how to validate novel diagnostic tests for use in human diagnostic testing. The fellow will be trained in writing standard operating procedures and scientific papers at post-doctoral level.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

• PhD in Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, Microbiology, Parasitology, Biology, or an equivalent area of study
• Prior experience in bioinformatic analysis and the use of bioinformatic software such as Geneious.
• Prior experience in the coding and development of bioinformatic pipelines is highly desirable.
• Prior experience in software development is desirable.
• Prior experience with developing and/or performing diagnostic tests is desirable.
• Understanding of Parasitic pathogens of humans is desirable.
