CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is available in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same. CDC increases the health security of our nation. As the nation’s health protection agency, CDC saves lives and protects people from health threats. To accomplish its mission, CDC conducts critical science and provides health information that protects our nation against expensive and dangerous health threats, and responds when these arise.
Research Project: This project builds on our previously completed logic model project to develop a comprehensive performance measurement plan for OCDAPS. The primary goal is to create measures that will help monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of our office's activities. A fellow will collaborate with OCDAPS staff, collaborating with each section to identify potential performance measures. These measures will then be used to construct a dynamic dashboard or repository, employing tools such as Tableau or Power BI for data visualization and tracking.
Project Scope
The fellow will review existing logic models outlining the objectives, activities, outputs, and outcomes of our office's programs. These logic models serve as foundational frameworks for understanding the causal relationships between inputs and desired outcomes. Building upon this foundation, the fellow will engage with each section in our office to identify indicators aligned with each logic model.
Collaborative Measure Development
Collaboration with staff members from diverse sections will be essential in ensuring the relevance and comprehensiveness of the identified measures. Through meetings and consultations, the fellow will facilitate discussions to identify measurable indicators that accurately reflect the progress and impact of each programmatic area. These measures will be designed to capture both quantitative metrics and qualitative insights, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of performance.
Dashboard Development
Once the measures have been identified and defined, the fellow will use data visualization tools such as Tableau or Power BI to translate them into an interactive dashboard. This dashboard will serve as a centralized platform for tracking and monitoring performance indicators in real-time. Developing the dashboard will provide stakeholders with valuable insights into the effectiveness of our office's initiatives, facilitating informed decision-making and necessary strategic adjustments.
This project represents a concerted effort to enhance our office's capacity for performance measurement and management. The resulting dashboard will facilitate ongoing monitoring and foster a culture of data-driven decision-making within our office.
Learning Objectives: The fellow will gain hands-on experience in evaluation and enhance their knowledge of its application to public health.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: June/July, 2024. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full time.
Participant Stipend: Stipend rates may vary based on numerous factors, including opportunity, location, education, and experience. If you are interviewed, you can inquire about the exact stipend rate at that time and if selected, your appointment offer will include the monthly stipend rate.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only.
ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

The qualified candidate should have received or be currently pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in the one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received with the last five years or is anticipated to be received by 6/1/2024.
