CDC Office and Location: Three Environmental Health Fellowship opportunities are available with the Office of Community Health and Hazard Assessment (OCHHA) within the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, GA.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same. CDC increases the health security of our nation. As the nation’s health protection agency, CDC saves lives and protects people from health threats. To accomplish its mission, CDC conducts critical science and provides health information that protects our nation against expensive and dangerous health threats, and responds when these arise.

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) is a federal public health agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. ATSDR's mission is to protect communities from harmful health effects related to exposure to natural and man-made hazardous substances. ATSDR responds to environmental health emergencies, investigates emerging environmental health threats, conducts research on the health impacts of hazardous waste sites, and supports state and local health partners.

Research Project: The selected participants for this ATSDR OCHHA opportunity will receive training and experience in environmental data analysis and the public health assessment evaluation of natural or anthropogenic environmental chemical exposures. In addition, training in public health assessment (PHA) methods, tools, and resources is available and will be required.

Learning Objectives: The participants will strengthen their skills in the analysis of environmental sampling data, chemical fate and transport modeling, data visualization, exposure pathway analysis, and evaluation of public health implications of chemical exposures through collaboration with multidisciplinary experts. They will have opportunities to obtain experience and build on their academic training through assessment of high-profile, nationally-recognized emerging environmental health issues and hazardous waste sites, such as:

  • Ethylene Oxide
  • Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Exposure Investigations
  • NPL (Superfund) sites

This opportunity will also allow participants to take part in other programs, projects, and activities related to the mission of ATSDR.

Mentor(s)The mentor for this opportunity is Caitlin Mertzlufft (iwe5@cdc.gov). If you have questions about the nature of the research please contact the mentor(s).
