CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available in the Community Engagement Science and Interventions Section (CESIS) of the Office of Capacity Development and Applied Prevention Science (OCDAPS) within the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.

The ATSDR, based in Atlanta, Georgia, is a federal public health agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. ATSDR protects communities from harmful health effects related to exposure to natural and man-made hazardous substances. We do this by responding to environmental health emergencies; investigating emerging environmental health threats; conducting research on the health impacts of hazardous waste sites; and building capabilities of and providing actionable guidance to state and local health partners. The CDC is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services, and manages operational functioning and tasks for ATSDR.

Research Project: Community engagement is essential to achieving the mission of the ATSDR. The selected participant will conduct research within CESIS, which is housed in ATSDR’s OCDAPS. OCDAPS builds capabilities by translating science into tools and actions that individuals, communities, and organizations apply to identify, reduce, or prevent health effects from exposures to hazardous substances. The goal of CESIS is to strengthen community engagement practice, policy, and science to effectively prevent and address harmful effects related to hazardous environmental exposures. This will be accomplished through partnerships, communication, training, and implementation, and research and evaluation activities.

Learning Objectives: The selected participant will gain experience through monitored tasks, regular mentoring supervision, and feedback according to their participation in the following activities:

  1. Conducting an environmental scan of all ATSDR’s community engagement implementation
  2. Conducting a literature review on community engagement practice models and research
  3. Developing a systematic data collection system to track, monitor, and analyze community engagement measures and relationships to environmental health outcomes
  4. Identifying community engagement indicators and measures
  5. Evaluating reach and impact for all communities, including EJ communities
  6. Developing briefs, fact sheets, manuscripts, and presentations to share knowledge and findings
