CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available in the Health Studies Section (HSS) of the Office of Community Health & Hazard Assessment (OCHHA) of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia. The appointment is full-time at the CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia area; scheduled alternative site determinations may be offered; however, participants must be prepared to commute on-site for training.
OCHHA is staffed by public health professionals with multidisciplinary backgrounds that include epidemiologists, environmental health scientists, toxicologists, medical officers, and statisticians. Our mission is to generate and communicate credible scientific information to communities about the relationship between environmental contaminants in their community and the potential adverse human health effects from those exposures to promote responsive public health actions.
- Assist with expanding the capabilities of CDART, including the creation of an emergency response scenario-based question databank combined with a field application
- Assist with CDART internal and external partnership calls and communication of the toolkit
- Assist with maintaining and expanding the capabilities of CCARAT, including the addition of ATSDR Record of Activity forms and integration of other systems
- Assist with data collection, entry, and management for epidemiological investigations and health studies, such as OCHHA’s Synthetic Turf Project
- Assist with research protocol development, statistical analysis, and results interpretation as assigned
- Assist with the generation of scientific and communication materials, including narrative reviews of epidemiologic evidence and translating scientific language for various audiences
- Tackle complex tasks which require attention to detail and the ability to work with a multi-disciplinary group of scientists and public health professionals
- Present to and network with diverse internal and external audiences
- Participate in HHS, ESRI, and CDCU trainings and courses for development and advancement of skills for public health professionals
Learning Objectives: The participant will learn how to apply a variety of epidemiological and health study investigation tools to provide public health impact; these include ArcGIS Online/Survey123 and related platform tools and Statistical Analysis Software (SAS). The participant will also learn specifics related to field data collection, including questionnaire administration and biological specimen collection (as applicable and feasible).

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: June 1, 2022. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only.
ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields (e.g. Public Health, Epidemiology), or be currently pursuing the degree with completion by May 31, 2022. Degree must have been received within the past five years.
Preferred Skills:
- Strong written and oral communication skills and attention to detail is required.
- Experience with GIS (Geographic Information Systems) or use of ArcGIS/ESRI products (e.g. Survey123) is strongly desired
- Experience with survey development, administration, and/or analysis (e.g. SAS or other statistical software) is desired
- Experience/proficiency with Microsoft Power BI is desired
- Experience with management and analysis of large data sets is desired
- Willingness to travel for data collection and site work as needed
