A fellowship opportunity is available with the Office of Community Health and Hazard Assessment (OCHHA), of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. 

The selected participant for this opportunity will receive training through ATSDR's Exposure Investigation Section by learning and participating in data analysis and ATSDR’s public health assessment process. The participant will strengthen their skills in data science, data analysis, and data visualization. They will have opportunities to apply their talents at high-profile, nationally-recognized sites, such as:

  • Jasper and Newton County (MO) Blood Lead Exposure Investigation
  • Ethylene Oxide (nationwide)
  • PFAS Exposure Investigations

This opportunity will allow the participant to take part in programs, projects, and activities related to the mission of ATSDR which is to protect communities from harmful health effects related to exposure to natural and man-made hazardous substances. ATSDR does this by responding to environmental health emergencies; investigating emerging environmental health threats; conducting research on the health impacts of hazardous waste sites; and building capabilities of and providing actionable guidance to state and local health partners.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: July 1, 2021 (start date is flexible)    

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing the degree with completion by July 1, 2021. Degree must have been received within the past five years.

Preferred skills:

  • Programming in R and SQL
  • Version control (git)
  • Knowledge of environmental data and statistics
  • Experience in analysis and management of environmental data
  • Ability to conduct research effectively independently and on teams
  • Experience in data visualization
Eligibility Requirements
  • Degree: Master's Degree received within the last 60 months or anticipated to be received by 7/1/2021 11:59:00 PM.
