A research opportunity is currently available with the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia. 

ATSDR is conducting a multi-site cross sectional study of potential health outcomes related to exposure to per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in drinking water. Under the guidance of a collaborative team of epidemiologists and health scientists, the selected participant will be assigned to the PFAS Health Studies team and involved in the following training opportunities:

  • Participate in ongoing health outcome studies on drinking water exposures to PFAS (Pease Study and Multi-site Study)
  • Data and sample collection, interact with research teams internally and at collaborating research institutions
  • Contribute to data management, statistical analysis, and results interpretation
  • Participate in the generation of communication materials, including translating scientific language for various audiences
  • Tackling complex projects which require attention to detail and the ability to collaborate with a multi-disciplinary group of scientists
  • Day-to-day mentoring and training in practice and application of environmental epidemiology and biostatistics in public health

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.


The qualified candidate should have received a master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Preferred skills:

  • Training or experience in epidemiology
  • Experience/proficiency with statistical analysis software (SAS, R, or other software)
  • Experience with management and analysis of large data sets
  • Familiarity with GIS/ArcGIS or other online geo-spatial tools
  • Willingness to travel for data collection and site research
