A fellowship opportunity is available with the Division of Toxicology and Human Health Sciences (DTHHS) of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. 

The Environmental Epidemiology Branch (EEB) designs and conducts environmental epidemiology studies to evaluate the association between exposure to environmental contaminants and adverse health effects. The branch consists of two teams (i.e., Community Studies and Research Activities) that are staffed by public health professionals with multidisciplinary backgrounds that include epidemiologists, environmental health scientists, toxicologists, medical officers, and statisticians. Our mission is to generate and communicate credible scientific information about the relationship between hazardous substances and adverse human health effects to promote responsive public health actions.

Under the guidance of a collaborative team of epidemiologists and health scientists, the selected participant may be involved in the following training opportunities:

  • Ongoing research in the Environmental Epidemiology Branch
  • Data collection, entry, and management for epidemiological investigations and health studies
  • Research protocol development, statistical analysis, and results interpretation
  • Generation of communication materials, including translating scientific language for various audiences
  • Complex tasks which require attention to detail and the ability to collaborate with a multi-disciplinary group of scientists

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.


The qualified candidate should have received a master's or doctoral degree in public health or a related discipline, with training or experience in epidemiology. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Preferred skills:

  • Experience/proficiency with statistical analysis software (SAS or other software)
  • Experience/proficiency with GIS and ArcGIS online tools
  • Experience with management and analysis of large data sets
  • Willingness to travel for data collection and site analysis
