Description

A postgraduate fellowship opportunity is available within the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), in Atlanta, Georgia. ATSDR maintains a joint director’s office with the National Center for Environmental Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

ATSDR’s mission is to protect communities from harmful health effects related to exposures to natural and man-made hazardous substances. The fellow will be supporting tasks for two ATSDR initiatives, Choose Safe Places for Early Care and Education (CSPECE) and soilSHOP. The CSPECE program works to ensure that children are protected where they learn and play and the soilSHOP helps people learn if their soil is contaminated with lead, and how to reduce exposures to contaminated soil and produce. The participant will gain experience in marketing current program initiatives, developing communication content with the guidance of their mentor and strengthening partnership engagement through sharing success stories, news and updates. More information on CSPECE can be found at https://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/safeplacesforECE/index.html. And more information on soilSHOP can be found at https://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/soilshop/index.html.

Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will be trained and gain experience by:

  • Drafting, analyzing and reviewing communication materials for CSPECE and soilSHOP programs, including website updates, fact sheets, infographics, and newsletters, with guidance from mentor

  • Collaborating with key staff on region-specific CSPECE & soilSHOP content and product development

  • Evaluating communication products created by grantees, ATSDR staff, and partners to provide recommendations for improvement and help identify additional communication products to meet program goals

  • Reviewing annual CSPECE reporting data; researching and implementing easy to read communications that best summarize major themes (infographic, fact sheet, etc.)

  • Collaborating to create templates based on grantee, ATSDR staff, and partner needs

  • Participating in CSPECE and soilSHOP Workgroup meetings and supporting workgroup members' communication tasks
