CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is available in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), located in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC protects America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same. CDC increases the health security of our nation. As the nation’s health protection agency, CDC saves lives and protects people from health threats. To accomplish its mission, CDC conducts important science and provides health information that protects our nation against expensive and dangerous health threats, and responds when these arise.

The Acquisitions and Information Technology Solutions Activity (AITSA) is located in the Office of the Director within the Global Immunization Division (GID) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. The mission of AITSA is to deliver robust GID IT solutions, manage the Division-wide Interagency Agreements (IAA) portfolio, and oversee contracts for the GID Office of the Director (OD). We strive for excellence by providing efficient, effective technological support, fostering collaboration across the Division, and ensuring the success of GID's mission through innovative solutions and reliable partnerships.

Research Project: You will engage in an applied learning and research project within AITSA in CDC’s GID. The project will examine how information technology, data analytics, automation, visualization, and emerging technologies can be applied to improve the accessibility, organization, analysis, and use of information supporting global immunization program activities.

You may train on projects involving Power BI reporting and dashboards, data management and visualization, SharePoint site development, Microsoft 365 Solutions, Power Platform tools, workflow automation, and the exploration of responsible AI applications for public health. In addition, you may learn how IT projects are designed and supported by observing requirement-gathering practices and gaining experience contributing to educational materials such as user guides, job aids, and technical documentation under mentor guidance.

Learning Objectives: You will have opportunities to strengthen skills while gaining exposure to enterprise IT within CDC's GID. Under the guidance of a mentor you will:

  • Develop knowledge of public health information technology by learning how enterprise IT, data, and digital tools are used to support CDC global immunization programs.
  • Strengthen data analytics and visualization skills through guided experience exploring datasets and developing reports, visualizations, and dashboards using tools such as Microsoft Power BI.
  • Gain experience with data management practices, including organizing, validating, transforming, documenting, and presenting information for programmatic use.
  • Develop skills with Microsoft 365 and collaborative technologies, including learning how SharePoint and related tools can support information sharing, knowledge management, and collaboration.
  • Explore low-code/no-code development and workflow automation using Microsoft Power Platform and related technologies to understand how routine processes may be streamlined or improved.
  • Explore responsible applications of artificial intelligence by examining potential AI-enabled approaches relevant to information management, analysis, automation, or other public health use cases while considering appropriate limitations and responsible-use practices.
  • Learn requirements-analysis methodologies by observing and participating in structured approaches for gathering, documenting, validating, and translating stakeholder needs into potential technical solutions.
  • Develop experience evaluating technology solutions by comparing potential approaches, documenting findings, participating in testing or prototype development, and considering usability and implementation requirements.
  • Strengthen technical communication and documentation skills through collaborationon preparation of research summaries, process documentation, user guides, job aids, presentations, and other technical materials.
  • Strengthen professional collaboration and communication skills through interaction with multidisciplinary staff and presentation of project findings and lessons learned to mentors and relevant GID stakeholders.
