CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is available in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH), in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC protects America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same. CDC increases the health security of our nation. As the nation’s health protection agency, CDC saves lives and protects people from health threats. To accomplish its mission, CDC conducts important science and provides health information that protects our nation against expensive and dangerous health threats, and responds when these arise.

Research Project: DLS conducts research and provides laboratory support that improves the detection, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of environmental, tobacco-related, nutritional, newborn, selected chronic and infectious diseases. Within DLS, the Clinical Reference and Chronic Diseases Biochemistry  Laboratories in the Clinical Standardization Laboratory Branch support this by performing research to develop new analytical methods and the application of methods to quantify biomarkers indicative of human exposure to environmental chemicals and indicative of chronic diseases.  Additionally, the Clinical Standardization Programs work to improve the quality and reliability of diagnostic tests for priority clinical analytes used in the research and patient care settings.

This fellowship will provide you the opportunity to obtain hands-on experience in human exposure research and laboratory medicine. This includes operating state-of-the-art laboratory equipment and procedures, performing quality assurance tasks, and processing and evaluating complex laboratory data.

Learning Objectives: Under the guidance of a mentor, training opportunities during the fellowship may include:

  • Gain hands-on experience preparing biological samples to quantify biomarkers of human exposure or chronic disease and establish reference values using established laboratory procedures.
  • Learn to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, and automated liquid-handling instrumentation.
  • Develop proficiency in processing and analyzing laboratory data using specialized software and established data-evaluation procedures.
  • Strengthen technical writing skills by preparing clear, accurate documentation of laboratory procedures, instrument operation, experimental results, troubleshooting activities, and corrective actions.
  • Build experience performing laboratory activities in accordance with applicable policies, regulations, and quality standards, including the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) requirements.

Mentor(s): The mentor for this opportunity is Uliana Danilenko (kmf6@cdc.gov). If you have questions about the nature of the research please contact the mentor(s).
