Description

The U.S. Army Combat Capabilities and Development Command Solider Center (DEVCOM-SC) is offering an Undergraduate or Master's degree-level internship with their Biological Sciences and Technology Team (BSTT).

What will I be doing?

As an ORISE participant, you will join the collaborative, diverse group of scientists in the BSTT to support human performance research efforts. This experience will provide an opportunity to lay the foundation for accelerating in vitro and ex vivo human performance to optimize warfighter health and performance. Along the way, you will engage in activities and research in a laboratory setting which may include, but is not limited to activites such as:

  • participation in human research in laboratory and field environments
  • cell culture maintenance and processing 
  • other routine laboratory activities
  • data analysis & presentations 
  • scientific writing
  • contribution to overall biomarker and cell culture research strategy
  • collaboration with a cross-fuctional team and external academic/industry collaborators

What is the anticipated start date?

 The DEVCOM-SC is ready to make appointments immediately. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships or fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

What is the appointment length?

Appointments are initially for one year with the option to extend the appointment for up to four additional years, contingent upon project needs and funding availability.

What are the benefits?

You will receive a stipend to be determined by DEVCOM-SC.  Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

About DEVCOM-SC

The U.S. Combat Capabilities Development Command - Soldier Center (CCDC Soldier Center) is located at the U.S. Army Natick Soldier Systems Center in Natick, Massachusetts, under the Army's Futures Command. Stretching back to 1954, the CCDC Soldier Center's history of support for the Soldier has continued uninterrupted for more than six decades, with a focus on Soldier-related research, development, testing and evaluation efforts. If Soldiers wear it, eat it, sleep under it, or have it airdropped to them in theater, it can be traced back to the CCDC Soldier Center. About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.  Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Qualifications

The qualified candidate will be currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree or Master's Degree in Biology and will complete the degree by May 30, 2022. 

Highly competitive applicants will have education and/or experience in one or more of the following:

  • biotechnology, microscopy, clinical biochemistry and in vitro assay development
  • utilization of standard laboratory techniques in: molecular biology, biochemistry, cell culture, exercise physiology, immunology, and/or biomarker analysis   
  • handling and processing several mammalian cell/tissue types (muscle, liver, intestine, immune)
  • immunological, biochemical and molecular biology assays, including ELISA, protein quantification, Western blotting, cytokine analysis, and PCR-based techniques 

Additionally, applicants selected for an interview should be prepared to provide examples of the following:

  • challenges oneself to enhance scientific capabilities
  • scientifically rigorous, highly organized, and with significant attention to detail
  • independent as well as collaborative 
  • motivated, interactive, and creative with the ability to participate across a matrixed environment to advance translational research
