The U.S. Army Environmental Command (AEC) is offering a Summer/Fall 2025 Environmental Compliance and Science internship at Fort Drum, New York.

What will I be doing?

As an ORISE participant and under the guidance of a mentor, you will be involved in tasks related to environmental compliance management. This internship will focus on hazardous waste, solid waste, and air pollution on Fort Drum. This internship will also provide the opportunity to develop and carry out small-scale projects, depending on individual interests.

As an ORISE participant, you will have the opportunity to hone your skills as well as develop new skills by engaging in a wide array of projects pertaining to environmental compliance management on a military installation. In addition, you will be exposed to day-to-day activities, special projects, and participate in meetings to understand how management decisions are made.

Where will I be located? Fort Drum, New York

What is the anticipated start date?

Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection, and in coordination with the selected candidate, the preferred start date is summer 2025. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis, and internships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

What is the appointment length? 

This appointment will be through September 30, 2025. This appointment may be renewed for additional research periods, depending on the candidate's availability, funding availability, project assignment, and program rules.

What are the benefits? 

You will receive a stipend to be determined by USAEC. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and the location of their research facility. Other benefits may include the following:

  • Relocation Allowance
  • Training and Travel Allowance

About USAEC

Fort Drum is a 108,000+ acre US Army installation in northern New York--approximately 80 miles north of Syracuse, 30 miles from Canada, and between Lake Ontario and the Adirondacks. Fort Drum is managed by a professional natural resources staff, which is concerned with forests and grasslands, invasive plants, endangered species, wetlands, fish/wildlife management, human-wildlife conflict, recreation, and outreach. About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between the DOE and the Department of Defense (DoD). Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD, or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment, as outlined in the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.  Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Qualifications

The eligible candidate must have earned their high school diploma or GED by June 30. 2025, be currently pursuing an associate's or bachelor's degree in an Applied Science, or have earned their degree within the last 60 months.

Candidates must be 18 years of age or older at the time of application, be a U.S. citizen, and possess either a Real ID or a passport. Candidates must have the ability to lift 50 lbs. 

While participants will not enter into an employment relationship with the DoD or any other agency, this opportunity will require a suitability investigation and a background investigation. Any offer made is considered tentative pending a favorable outcome of the investigation.
