Description

The U.S. Army Environmental Command (USAEC) U.S. Army Garrison Fort Huachuca Branch is offering a student or recent graduates for a full-time in-person internship in geospatial data management and map making. Fort Huachuca is an Army installation in southeastern Arizona, adjacent to the town of Sierra Vista.  The installation encompasses 80,000 acres across several environmental zones. The Huachuca Mountains form the Fort’s western boundary, and the majority of the installation resides in a high-elevation (4,600ft AMSL on average) desert grassland environment. The installation has many different environmental conservation and compliance areas to work in such as wildlife management, forestry, cultural resources, NEPA, invasive flora and fauna, air, drinking water, storm water, hydrology, hazardous waste, hazardous material and waste water.

As an ORISE participant and under the guidance of a mentor, you will receive hands-on geospatial data management experience in a fast-paced government environmental office. Activities may include participating in geospatial data gathering, utilizing GIS software, map making, and back-end geodatabase management.

What is the anticipated start date?

The USAEC U.S. Army Garrison Fort Huachuca Branch is prepared to begin this appointment immediately. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships or fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

What is the appointment length?

This appointment is a twelve-month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

What are the provisons?

You will receive a stipend to be determined by USAEC. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.  Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Qualifications

The qualified candidate will have earned or currently pursuing an Associate's, Bachelor's, or master's in geographic information systems within 36 months or will graduate by June 1, 2026.

Applicants must: 
• Be U.S. Citizens 
• Be able to pass basic background investigation for security clearance

Strong applicants will:
• Have experience with ArcGIS Pro or equivalent programs
• Be familiar with ESRI products, including Field Maps
• Have taken at least 1 formal GIS course 
• Provide a sample map from their portfolio upon request
