The U.S. Army Environmental Command (USAEC) is offering a bachelor's level internship at the Fort Huachuca facility for a natural resource specialist. Located in Cochise County, in southeast Arizona, about 15 miles north of the border with Mexico, Fort Huachuca is an Army installation with a rich frontier history. Established in 1877, the Fort was annexed in 1971 by the city of Sierra Vista and declared a national landmark in 1976. Today Fort Huachuca is the largest employer in Cochise County and the largest economic contributor in Arizona. The Fort develops and tests Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Combat Systems, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance capabilities; delivers intelligence and unmanned aircraft systems training and education; designs, develops and integrates intelligence capabilities, concepts and doctrine; and provides world-class quality support services to the Huachuca community to enable mission command in support of Army and Joint operations and the continued evolution of Fort Huachuca. The Fort's unique environment encompasses 946 square miles of restricted airspace and 2,500 square miles of protected electronic ranges, key components to the national defense mission.

What will I be doing and why should I apply?

As an ORISE participant and under the guidance of a mentor, you will have the opportunity to hone your skills by assisting with a wide array of tasks pertaining to government natural resource management in forestry, wildlife and archaeology programs on Fort Huachuca. You will be exposed to different aspects of these programs such as big game management, nuisance wildlife, wild and prescribed fire management, and archaeologic surveys. While this assignment is primarily designed as a flexible internship meant to provide experience for new graduates, you may also have the opportunity to develop and carry out small-scale research projects depending on task load and interest. Some tasks will be generally required as part of the internship (for example, field work during natural resource projects), but overall the assignment can be tailored to applicant interest.

What is the anticipated start date?

The US Army Environmental Command is ready to make appointments effective July 1, 2023. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships or fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

What is the appointment length?

This appointment is a twelve-month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.  Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The applicants must be purusing or have completed a bachelor's degree in an Applied Science and have maintained at least a 3.0 GPA.  Applicants must be U.S. Citizens and must be able to pass a basic background investigation.

At minimum, applicants should have:

• S130/190 wildland firefighting certifications and ability to pass ardous pack
• Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access
• Proficiency in writing and basic editing skills
• Ability to conduct fieldwork in harsh desert conditions (high summer heat or windy winter cold), with little to no cover for extended periods of time (5-7 hours a day, for as long as 30 consecutive business days. No camping required.)
• A strong sense of initiative and the ability to prioritize and self-direct from a list of tasks
• A positive, diplomatic attitude and the ability to collaborate with others
