A Research Molecular Virologist opportunity is available with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS) National Animal Disease Center (NADC) in Ames, Iowa. The selected applicant’s primary responsibility will be conducting basic and applied research on nidoviruses such as porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), porcine delta coronavirus and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus. Secondary responsibilities will include working with the swine virology team on ongoing projects. Activities will include development of vaccines and studying viral pathogenesis using molecular tools both in cell culture and in swine.

The appointment is full time for one year and may be renewed upon the recommendation of ARS and the availability of funding. The range for the annual stipend rate for this appointment is $60,877-$69,497. The established rate will be commensurate with education level and experience. A stipend supplement in the amount of $12,156 is available to offset the cost of a health insurance plan. The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance. Health insurance may be obtained through ORAU/ORISE. A travel allowance in the amount of $3,000 is available to reimburse travel related expenses to scientific and professional development activities. The participant does not become an employee of ARS or ORISE.

While participants will not enter into an employment relationship with ARS, this position requires a pre-employment check and full background investigation.

To be eligible, applicants must have received a doctorate degree in Virology, or equivalent degree, within five years of the desired starting date. Advanced degrees in related fields are desirable.

Preferred skills include:

• Knowledge of molecular virology with an emphasis on viral diseases
• Experience with viral infectious clones, RNA manipulation such as vitro transcription and translation, transfection, etc.
• Experience with animal models for infectious disease study
• Experience with cell culture assays, e.g., cell culture passage, culture of pathogens, ELISA, PCR, etc.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
