The Weapons and Materials Research Directorate (WMRD) of the US Army Research Laboratory (USARL) has an opportunity for graduate students who are currently enrolled in an accredited Masters or Doctoral degree program to perform research onsite at WMRD facilities during the summer of 2019. The goals of WMRD are to enhance the lethality and survivability of weapons systems, and to meet the soldier's technology needs for advanced weaponry and protection, and novel materials and manufacturing science. Research is pursued in energetic materials dynamics, propulsion/flight physics, projectile warhead mechanics, high-strain and ballistics, terminal effects phenomena, armor/survivability technologies, environmental chemistry, bio-inspired materials, coatings, corrosion, and advanced materials (energetic, metals, ceramics, polymers, composite/hybrids, and mechanics/material response) for armor, armament, missiles, ground vehicles, helicopters, and individual soldier applications necessary for maintaining and ensuring supremacy in future land warfare.
Research can be experimental, computational, or a combination of both.
Computer resources include PC and LINUX workstations, as well as SGI, IBM, and CRAY mainframes. WMRD has a wide array of experimental capabilities that are both unique and state-of-the-art. Applicants ill work directly with ARL researchers on a problem of mutual interest.
This opportunity is open to all STEM disciplines that support research in sciences for lethality and protection as well as materials research. These can include, but are not limited to: physics, chemistry, engineering (mechanical, aerospace, chemical, electrical, engineering mechanics), materials science, manufacturing technology, and mathematics.

CCDC Army Research Laboratory (ARL) Research Associateship Program (RAP) Summer Student Experience is an educational program that allows undergraduate through PhD students and recent Bachelor and Master's degree graduates to participate in a paid research experience at a Department of Defense laboratory over the summer break.
A candidate must be in good standing (a minimum of a 2.5 GPA) at an accredited university or technical institute, and in an academic program leading to an undergraduate or graduate degree.
Scientists and engineers at ARL help shape and execute the Army's program for meeting the challenge of developing technologies that will support Army forces in meeting future operational needs. Students can participant in research in one of the following areas:
