This research project focuses on the growth, synthesis, metrology, functional property evaluation, and device concepts of semiconductor and metallic quantum dots, nanotubes, two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, and their heterostructures. Diverse synthesis methodologies—including wet chemistry, bio-templated growth, chemical vapor deposition (CVD), electron-beam (E-beam) evaporation, and sputtering deposition—are leveraged to engineer and assemble nanomaterials for advanced electronics, photonics, and magnetics applications. Material characterizations are performed via a suite of high-resolution imaging and analytical techniques such as HR -TEM, SAED, EDS, UHV-AFM, STM, X-ray crystallography, alongside a comprehensive suite of Raman, UV-Vis, and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopies. Furthermore, the project investigates specialized physical phenomena, encompassing electrical and thermal transport, electron tunneling, spin-aligned electron transport, Hall and magneto-optical effects, linear and non-linear optical (NLO) responses, as well as plasmon/polariton-assisted strong light-matter coupling. To bridge foundational materials science with device-level applications, functional devices are fabricated using E-beam and focused-ion beam (FIB) lithography, wet and dry etching, and laser-assisted nano-structuring. Device performance is evaluated from room temperature down to cryogenic conditions utilizing four-probe measurements, STM, vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), Physical Property Measurement Systems (PPMS), and magneto-optic Kerr effect setups.
