What will I be doing?

As an ORISE participant, you will join a community of scientists and researchers involved in enhancing the Army Public Health Center’s Blast Overpressure Exposure Assessment Capability which includes performing health hazard-related assessments, modeling, and analyses while focusing on training and experience of collecting blast overpressure-related health hazard data.  Your experience will include participation in the documenting of blasts overpressure-related historical knowledge, lessons learned, processes, procedures, SOPs, protocols, risk assessment logic, database structure, and reporting strategies that include Risk Assessment Codes (RAC), recommendations to mitigate BOP exposure risk, and residual RACs.

• Conducting evaluations necessary to make recommendations for mitigating blast overpressure, impulse noise, and chemical substances-related health hazards associated with materiel acquisitions and Army modernization.
• Collaborating in forums, tasks, report writing, and events associated with planning, collecting, and assessing blast overpressure, impulse noise, and chemical substances-related health hazards during live fire events, public health practice, occupational and environmental health outcomes, and costs of health hazard-related injuries and illnesses.
• Gaining an understanding of the processes, models, tools, standards, data collection hardware/software, and health protection criteria used by the Army and DoD to assess the potential for Soldiers to be exposed to blast overpressure, impulse noise, and chemical substances-related health hazards while operating, testing, and maintaining weapon platforms, munitions, training devices, and other materiel systems during training and combat. 
• Experiencing the development and drafting of Line of Inquiry 3's (Exposure Environment) input to the FY18 NDAA Sec. 734 Workgroup Technical Report, and the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (OASD(HA)) Report to Congress.

What is the anticipated start date?

 Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships or fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

What is the appointment length?

This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

What are the benefits? 

You will receive a stipend to be determined by APHC. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.  Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Qualified applicants should be a high school/GED graduate with the intent to enroll or currently pursuing an undergraduate degree the areas of Environmental and Marine Sciences or a related field.  Applicants who have a minimum of two years of experience in collecting, processing, analyzing, and reporting on blast overpressure, noise, and chemical substances health hazard data associated with live fire of military weapons breaching charges are highly preferred.
