The Public Health Command Europe’s (PHCE) Preventive Medicine Services serves as a resource of high-quality, timely epidemiologic information, disease threat analysis, health education, and disease outbreak investigations for health care personnel and decision-makers in EUCOM, AFRICOM, and CENTOM. PHCE Preventive Medicine Services mission is to enhance combat readiness, reduce injuries and disease, and improve the quality of life for our soldiers and beneficiaries.

The Public Health Command Europe's Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance Section is offering an ORISE learning opportunity that will focus on epidemiologic methods used to provide information on health risks to commanders, Force Health Protection personnel, and our beneficiary populations. Under the guidance of a mentor, the participants will collect data from a variety of proprietary and open sources on immediate health risks to beneficiary populations, such as evidence of outbreaks or infectious diseases of concern, and will develop the skills required to analyze this data and make a determination of risk level and to provide this information to stakeholders in a useful format such as a daily or situation report. Participants will also learn to develop the necessary skills to access information from a variety of international open sources on larger, long-term health threats to our population and develop the required skills to analyze these data and communicate them effectively to our beneficiary populations. This opportunity will provide the participant with the knowledge and understanding to produce public messaging products about specific health risks such as smoking or vaccine-preventable diseases.

Appointment Length

This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

Participant Benefits

Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by US Army Public Health Command Europe.  Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location.  Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency.  Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

Additional Information

While participants will not enter into an employment relationship with DOD or any other agency, this opportunity will require a suitability investigation/background investigation. Any offer made is considered tentative pending favorable outcome of the investigation.

And ideal candidate will have a MPH (or equivalent such as Masters of Epidemiology) or higher degree.
