Description

Army Public Health Center's mission is to enhance Army readiness by identifying and assessing current and emerging health threats, developing and communicating public health solutions, and assuring the Army's Public Health Enterprise quality and effectiveness.

This opportunity will focus on the qualitative and quantitative analysis of contaminants in food and water matrices and food microbiology laboratory procedures. Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will assist with analyzing samples to identify any potential food borne or water pathogens on samples throughout Europe and areas in support of military operations. Learning to identify and isolate various human pathogens and their ability to cause food borne illnesses, the participants will learn methods that utilize the best sensitivity and specificity to detect contaminants, along with time-saving and cost-efficient methods. During the opportunity, participants will evaluate the results of different techniques and determine their relevance to public health implications. The participants will also be able to provide scientific advice regarding food contaminant analysis and communicate with other specialists in the field. Mentors will also guide participants in focusing on career development, teaching laboratory requirements for ISO 17025 accreditation for future employment opportunities. The participants will learn about laboratory safety requirements, quality control procedures, and acceptance criteria.

Note: Participants will be mentored in Laboratory Standards to include: ISO 17025, Accredited Biological Testing Laboratory (BTL). Location: Rheinland-Pfalz, Landstuhl

Appointment Length

This appointment is a three month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

Participant Benefits

Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by APHC. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location.  Other benefits may include the following:

  • Training and Travel Allowance

Nature of Appointment

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency.  Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

Additional Information

While participants will not enter into an employment relationship with DOD or any other agency, this opportunity will require a suitability investigation/background investigation. Any offer made is considered tentative pending favorable outcome of the investigation.

Qualifications

Master's or Bachelor's Degree received within Life Health and Medical Sciences.
