APHC is offering a mentorship opportunity in the Population Health Reporting Program office within the Public Health Communication Directorate. The ORISE participant will collaborate with a mentor to support the Health of the Force. The Health of the Force is a suite of products designed to provide an evidence-based portrait of the health and well-being of the Army.  Through annual analysis of medical, wellness, and environmental health data, Health of the Force communicates progress and challenges in Army health. The written report and online digital platform highlight top contributors to medical readiness, such as injury and behavioral health, and assesses conditions and behaviors, such as obesity and tobacco use, that contribute to these diagnoses.

The Participant will support the technical and analytical authorities responsible for the development of complex queries for interacting with disparate databases. Interacting with disparate databases, the participant will extract, manipulate, transform, and analyze data for use in support of various products. In addition, the participant will be able to visualize and document results from analyses using a variety of methods and tools and will archive resulting data. He/she will gain experience in various phases of data warehouse design and development of processes required to extract, transform, and load (ETL) data into an integrated warehouse and visualize using tools such as Tableau. The participant will also be able to use their skills and judgment to support complex public health products, or very broad product applications, on a continuing and frequent basis. Concluding this mentorship experience, the participant will enlist a mastery of the theories, concepts, principles, practices, methods, and techniques of public health and data science.

Appointment Length

This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by APHC. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location.  Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency.  Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

Additional Information

While participants will not enter into an employment relationship with DOD or any other agency, this opportunity will require a suitability investigation/background investigation. Any offer made is considered tentative pending favorable outcome of the investigation.

The participant should have a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Math, Statistics, Computer Science, Information Science, or a related science or engineering field.

1) Experience in Army and Defense public health programs, initiatives and strategies. 
2) 2 years of specialized experience with formulating database queries using SQL (SAS/Teradata/Oracle/Microsoft SQL Server/DB2)
3) Experience with optimization and/or simulation software (e.g. SAS/OR, Pyomo, JMP, SPSS, Minitab, R, Tableau, etc.).
4) Experience in collaborating on multi-disciplinary projects, internally and externally communicating, and information management.
