Description

The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) 711th Human Performance Wing (711 HPW) is a unique combination of three units: the Airman Systems Directorate (RH), the US Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM) and the Human Systems Integration Directorate (HP). The synergies of combining the ideas, resources and technologies of these units position the 711 HPW as a world leader in the study and advancement of human performance. For more information about the 711th HPW, please visit: https://www.wpafb.af.mil/afrl/711hpw/

The research activities in this opportunity will be conducted on the Carnegie Mellon University campus under a cooperative research agreement between Air Force Research Laboratory and Carnegie Mellon University.

The Science of Understanding program will develop cognitive models and metrics for assessing a human's mental model of machine capabilities and measuring the dynamics of human decision making in human-machine teaming tasks. The participant will have the opportunity to engage in the following:
  • Design, develop and execute human decision-making experiments and human-machine teaming experiments
  • Gain experience and develop skills in data analytics and modeling of human behavioral data
  • Derive and develop cognitive models of the tasks under study
  • Hone programming skills implementing and fitting cognitive models, including experience using mindmodeling.org supercomputing for cognitive modeling
  • Contribute to communication materials and publications about the Science of Understanding research program
  • Gain experience in the role human-machine teaming plays in Warfighter Readiness Research by contributing to research in cognitive modeling and interactive task learning and collaborating with researchers at Air Force Research Laboratory
  • Develop research planning skills by contributing to reviews of the state of the art and roadmaps for future research in the Science of Understanding program.

Appointment Length

This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

Participant Benefits
