Description

The Air and Space Biosciences Division within the 711th Human Performance Wing at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) is offering a post-Master's research opportunity. The Division’s mission is to discover, demonstrate, and transition knowledge products and technology solutions from the full spectrum of bioscience, biotechnology and aerospace medicine, to enable, enhance, sustain, and restore the health and performance of the multi-domain Airman.

What will I be doing?

As an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) participant, you will join the scientists and researchers in the Air and Space Biosciences Division to create a software tool for automating the clinical validation process used for transporting patients via aeromedical evacuation. The goal of this project is to develop a prototype system for use by the validating flight surgeon to help them determine whether a patient is clinically ready for aeromedical evacuation. The vision for this tool is that it will incorporate capabilities for automatically aggregating available patient information, perform necessary calculations based on physiological and clinical factors, and provide recommendations to the validating flight surgeon that are transparent and queryable, using an open-source large language model chatbot.

Why should I apply?

Under the guidance of a mentor, you will gain hands-on experience to complement your education and support your academic and professional goals. Along the way, you will engage in activities and research in several areas. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Research planning and development
  • Programming
  • Medical software development
  • Human factors design
  • Quality assurance testing
  • Technical presentation and report writing

Where will I be located? Dayton, Ohio

What is the anticipated start date?

Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.
