Lightweight Innovations for Tomorrow (LIFT) seeks to prepare the next generation of scientists, engineers, and technicians who will advance manufacturing technologies and processes into the 21^st century. The LIFT Learning Lab Internship Program offers senior-level undergraduate students attending a four-year institution within the state of Michigan a chance to participate in a 16-week research experience with an assigned mentor at LIFT Headquarters.

The Thermo-Mechanical and Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) internship is open to seniors in a relevant undergraduate program and will afford the student opportunity to familiarize themselves with LIFT manufacturing capabilities in Thermo-Mechanical Processing (TMP) as well as participation on teams working on TMP related research.  The TMP programs will also allow the student a view into the use of ICME as a component of advanced research.

In addition, students will gain exposure to LIFT’s broader focus on its technology pillars: Joining and Assembly, Coatings, Novel/Agile Processing, Thermo-Mechanical Processing, and Powder Processing. Students may be exposed to a variety of equipment and processes including: extrusion press, flexible joining system, hydroforming press, stamping/forming press, hot isostatic processing, metal injection molding, tilt-pour casting, and linear friction welding through an introduction to the new equipment in LIFT’s High Bay.

Throughout the internship, students will be exposed to various aspects of the LIFT business including, but not limited to: Customer service and professional conduct; Legal services and contracts;  Corporate structure; Interpersonal skills; Business development; and Communications.

Program participants will receive:

• The opportunity to become familiar with state-of-the-art equipment and learn about lightweight manufacturing from accomplished engineers. This interaction with scientists and engineers, coupled with the networking opportunity to establish contacts within the lightweight manufacturing industry, will encourage further study and career preparation.

• A competitive stipend of $20 per hour for senior-level standing.  The appointment requires a maximum commitment of 25 hours of participation per week for 16 weeks.  Appointments of less than 25 hours will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

LIFT, operated by the American Lightweight Materials Manufacturing Innovation Institute (ALMMII), is a public-private partnership whose mission is to develop and deploy advanced lightweight materials manufacturing technologies, and implement education and training programs to prepare the workforce. The LIFT partnership includes Tier 1 OEMs, their suppliers, small and start-up manufacturers, academia, research institutes, educators, workforce development organizations, and professional societies from across industries around the country.

This program is open to qualified senior-level undergraduate students. To be eligible, an applicant must:

• Be a senior-level student in good standing at a four-year institution in the state of Michigan.

• Be a U.S. Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident.

• Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 or the equivalent as verified by updated transcripts.

• Be at least 18 years old at the time of appointment.

• Have two letters of reference submitted through Zintellect.

• Provide proof of health insurance coverage. The participant can purchase health insurance coverage through ORAU, if needed.

• Citizenship: LPR or U.S. Citizen
• Degree: Bachelor's Degree.
• Minimum Overall GPA: 3.20
