ORAU has a contingent job opportunity for a Biologist in support of the overall functions of the TB Imaging Program (TBIP), Division of Intramural Research (DIR) located in Bethesda, MD. The goal of the Unit is to isolate human monoclonal antibodies against SARS-CoV-2, Plasmodium falciparum and other targets of interest as prophylactics or therapeutics, or to aid vaccine design. The positions are contingent on award of an upcoming contract with NIAID Professional, Scientific and Technical Support Services. Salary for positions will be determined based on education and experience. Relocation support is not available for this position.

Biologist (2 Positions)

• Ensure smooth and efficient running of imaging suite operations in by ensuring operational maintenance of safety and scanning equipment and facilities.
• Perform PET/CT equipment calibrations and quality checks adhering to quality assurance guidelines collect accurate data.
• Operate and troubleshoot scanning equipment inside the ABSL-3 environment replacing parts if directed by remote engineers.
• Participate in setup of new PET/CT equipment on the NIH campus and in the ABSL-3.
• Interact with service engineers, schedule periodic maintenance and chaperone these engineers in the ABSL-3.
• Attachment of monitoring probes for respiratory gating, temperature, blood CO2 and oxygen concentration to animals and correct/replicable positioning of animals on the scanner bed.
• Maintenance of radioactivity usage and disposal records; understanding and adherence to NIH radiation usage policies/procedures and safety guidelines.
• Learn F18-FDG dosing and injection under the NIH radiation usage policies/procedures and safety guidelines.
• Maintain files of images created by the PET/CT and transfer the images to a clearly maintained filing system for collaborators to access. Develop methods to analyze PET/CT data and prepare SOP’s for others to follow.
• Interpret results using multiple commercial quantitative software to produce files of measurements of FDG activity or CT density.
• Use bioinformatic approaches, statistical methods and computer programs to collect, organize, and analyze data for optimal retrieval and presentation of results in a clear, concise manner.
• Communicate results with the staff scientist/director and principal investigators as well as other collaborators.
• Train new personnel, streamline tasks and distribution of responsibilities among team members.

Position Requirements:

• Work location: Bethesda, MD.
• Operate PET/CT scanning equipment inside the ABSL-3 environment and maintain quality control testing and records for this equipment.
• Work in a ABSL-3 suite with some animal contact, and work with radioactive chemicals.

Specific Qualifications:

• All support positions required a minimum of a BS degree; some require a MS, MD, or Ph.D.
• The education, skills and relevant years of experience required for each support position are consistent with those identified as the minimum requirements for the labor categories specified in the contract.
