Description

ORAU has a contingent job opportunity for a Scientist in support of the overall functions of the Vaccine Immunology Program (VIP), Vaccine Research Center (VRC), NIAID, located in Bethesda, MD. The positions are contingent on award of an upcoming contract with NIAID Professional, Scientific and Technical Support Services. Salary for positions will be determined based on education and experience. Relocation support is not available for this position.

Technical Requirements:

  • Perform a wide range of complex procedures and techniques including, cell culture, molecular biology, DNA/RNA analysis, DNA/RNA isolation, DNA/RNA purification, DNA/RNA next generation (Illumina) sequencing, flow cytometry, gene cloning.
  • Conduct research including planning and conducting experiments and data analysis.
  • Calibrate and operate a variety of laboratory instruments under GLP guidelines and follow SOP’s to perform test, analysis, and other procedures.
  • Develop protocols for use in clinical vaccine trial analyses
  • Collaborate with scientists from other organizations or institutions involved in similar or related research projects.
  • Collaborate with students, post-doctoral fellows and non-doctoral research technicians on experimental design and laboratory-based methodologies.
  • Maintain accurate, daily records of experiments.
  • Perform high level next generation DNA/RNA sequencing data analysis.
  • Contribute to pipeline management for the Vaccine Immunology Program.
  • Develop novel protocols for sequencing viral genomes by sequence alignment and primer design.
  • Design and implement improved methods to existing standard next generation sequencing protocols.
  • Develop protocols into SOP’s for use in training material.
  • Develop CITE-Seq and associated methodologies
  • Maintain and operate two workstation robots to increase library prep throughput and sample clean-up.
  • Develop the technique of single cell RNAseq.
  • Train individuals from other laboratories around the world in the technique of single cell RNAseq, as a part of VRC collaborations.
  • Analyze sequencing data produced by different types of analyzers.
  • Integrate new instruments (NovaSeq, 10x Chromium, Mosquito) to increase the project versatility of the Genome Analysis Core.
  • Manage sequencing projects once they are initiated by determining costs and acceptable timelines and providing frequent updates for these collaborations.
  • Implementation and integration of LIMS system (Clarity or LabWare)
  • Work with staff to plan technical aspects of sequencing projects by suggesting innovative methods and approaches.
  • Work with staff to develop and optimize assays for diverse new projects.
  • Produce high quality scientific data and analysis consistently using new methods such as single cell sequencing.
  • Involved in budget management of various projects.
Qualifications
  • Masters in Biotechnology or related discipline.
  • Minimum of two years of practical experience working in NGS technologies.
  • Demonstrates experience working in a laboratory environment.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of maintaining accurate and detailed records.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of proper laboratory disposal methods and safety procedures.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of budget management for various projects.
  • Working knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices.
