About the NASA Postdoctoral Program
The NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP) offers unique research opportunities to highly-talented scientists to engage in ongoing NASA research projects at a NASA Center, NASA Headquarters, or at a NASA-affiliated research institute. These one- to three-year fellowships are competitive and are designed to advance NASA’s missions in space science, Earth science, aeronautics, space operations, exploration systems, and astrobiology.
Description:
This work focuses on ultrasensitive detector design, fabrication, characterization, and integration into instruments for ground-based, balloon-borne, and space-based astrophysical investigations. Active areas of research include development of superconducting detectors, including transition edge sensors (TESs) and kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs), integrated into large-format arrays and silicon on-chip spectrometers. The group is also heavily involved in developing supporting technologies including detector readout electronics, optical elements, and photonics. Current application areas include observations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and diffuse Galactic emission, line intensity mapping (LIM), studies of protoplanetary disks, and galaxy evolution science.
A key focus of our group is deploying instruments for suborbital and orbital observations. Current projects include the ground-based CMB experiment CLASS (Cosmology Large Angular Scale Surveyor); the balloon-borne projects EXCLAIM (EXperiment for Cryogenic Large-Aperture Intensity Mapping, a submillimeter intensity mapping experiment) and POEMM (Planetary Origins and Evolution Multispectral Monochromator, studying planet formation and evolution); and the PRIMA (Probe Far-Infrared Mission for Astrophysics) space mission. Finally, technology development to enable future space missions, including the Habitable Worlds Observatory, a CMB Probe, and a future far-infrared flagship mission, is being intensively pursued and offers unique opportunities for postdoctoral research.
