The Division of STD Prevention provides national leadership, research, policy development, and scientific information to reduce and prevent STDs.  The Program Development and Quality Improvement Branch (PDQIB) is responsible for the management and oversight of programs supporting both health department STD prevention and control programs and clinical training centers as well as the wider health care community.  The Branch is comprised of 3 teams: Program, Evaluation, and Clinical. The selected fellow will work on two main projects with the Evaluation and Clinical Teams.

Evaluation of Community Approaching to Reducing STDS (CARS)

Evaluation topics may include:

  • Assess the implementation of the Community Approaches to Reducing STDs (CARS) community engagement approach to address and how disparate communities prioritize social determinants of health for STD prevention.
  • Determine how disparate communities prioritize social determinants of health for STD prevention, utilizing practical application of the social interdependence theory.
  • Identify effective communication and retention strategies for community advisory groups.

Implementation of DSTDP’s Recommendations for Providing Quality STD Clinical Services

PDQIB has a draft document on Recommendations for Providing Quality STD Clinical Services. These recommendations focus on clinical operations and will serve as a complement to the CDC Sexually Transmitted Diseases Treatment Guidelines. The main objectives of the document are to define levels of STD care and outline minimum services offered by each level to support STD clinics in providing high quality and appropriate care.  Implementation of these recommendations will include working with local STD clinics to pilot the use of the Recommendations.

A partial list of responsibilities includes:

  • Assist with development of a tool to assess levels of care in STD clinics.
  • Assist with piloting assessment tool
  • Assist with data collection and analysis
  • Coordinate STD clinic learning collaboratives to implement recommendations
  • Conduct literature reviews and assist with preparation of manuscripts
  • Other responsibilities related to STD clinic operations
