Description

The Minority Serving Institutions Partnership Program (MSIPP) Internships is a new program to promote the education and development of the next generation workforce in critical science, engineering, technology, and math (STEM) related disciplines that complement current and future missions of DOE national laboratories.  The MSIPP Internship program is designed to provide an enhanced training environment for next generation scientists and engineers by exposing them to research challenges unique to our industry.

MSIPP Interns will be given the opportunity to complete Summer Internships aligned with ongoing U.S. Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management (DOE-EM) research under the direction of a host national laboratory.  The internship will be performed at the host national laboratory, utilizing their facilities and equipment under the guidance of a research staff member.

Minority Serving Institutions are institutions of higher education enrolling populations with significant percentages of undergraduate minority students.

The Savannah River National Laboratory’s National Analytical Management Program (NAMP) is seeking an individual to assist with data collection and management, programmatic research, public outreach and networking during a summer internship.  A background in applied sciences (particularly radiochemical analyses), public health, or public relations would be beneficial.

The NAMP serves as a coordination point for analytical resources within the DOE complex, and assists national and international agencies with obtaining access to analytical capabilites and expertise within the DOE laboratory network.  The NAMP addresses national technological and resource needs via the promotion of cross-site integration, standardization of best technical practices, promotion and development of practical training and education programs, and the support and development of emergency response laboratory networks.

The goal of the internship will be to perform data collection and statistical review and comparison of performance testing from a variety of laboratories, design and implement a public networking/social media site (LinkedIn) for one or more committees within the NAMP, design and prepare publications and presentations associated with NAMP and its committees, and assist with strategic development of laboratory networks within a national framework. A working knowledge of radioanalytical laboratory protocols and accreditations would be beneficial.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will be pursuing a degree in the sciences.  Experience with radiological laboratory protocols is preferred.  It would be optimum for the candidate to have some familiarity with public health, public outreach, or public relations.

Additional skills desired:

  • Radiochemistry or environmental analysis, and a basic knowledge of statistical analyses
  • Excel, word processing, Power Point, etc
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Strategic communication skills
  • LinkedIn

  1. Be currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited Minority Serving Institution *see criteria for Minority Serving Institutions here http://srnl.doe.gov/msipp/internships.htm
  2. Be working towards a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) degree
  3. Have an undergraduate cumulative minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
