Description

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Challenge is an innovative new program designed to give junior and senior undergraduates (completed 60+ hours or equivalent) in good standing at a regularly accredited U.S. college/university an early start on the scientific process and solving real world science problems. Just as established scientists write grant proposals suggesting solutions to scientific problems, qualified students will apply by writing a research solution to an ORNL scientific challenge.

Winning students will visit ORNL for 10 weeks during summer 2016 (June - August) to conduct research with highly respected ORNL mentors and university faculty on their submitted solution. Challege winners will receive:

  • Mentoring, networking, and collaboration opportunities with ORNL scientists and researchers, and other ORNL interns and Challenge winners
  • Professional development activities including seminars, workships, facility tours, lectures, and participation in the ORNL Intern Poster Session
  • A competitive weekly stipend of $650
  • Furnished housing and utilities
  • Travel assistance to and from site (maximum of $1,500)
  • Travel for additional training/research during appointment with mentor approval (conference, workshop, training class, field work, etc.)
