A fellowship opportunity is available in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health, US Department of Health and Human Services, in Washington, DC.
The fellow will serve as scientific research assistant to the members of the Presidential Advisory Council on Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria (the Advisory Council). Main activities include supporting respective working groups tasks, research on issues and topics tasked to the Advisory Council, and drafting reports, letters, white papers, and other forms of scientific writing. Topic areas for research and science writing will include those that:
1.Preserve the effectiveness of antibiotics by optimizing their use;
2.Advance research to develop improved methods for combating antibiotic resistance and conducting antibiotic stewardship;
3.Strengthen surveillance of antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections;
4.Prevent the transmission of antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections;
5.Advance the development of rapid point-of-care and agricultural diagnostics;
6.Further research on new treatments for bacterial infections;
7.Develop alternatives to antibiotics for agricultural purposes;
8.Maximize the dissemination of up-to-date information on the appropriate and proper use of antibiotics to the general public and human and animal healthcare providers; and
9.Improve international coordination of efforts to combat antibiotic resistance.
Candidates will be provided instruction/direction by the Advisory Council Designated Federal Officer, Committee Manager, and Advisory Council Chair.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and HHS. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of HHS contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at HHS in the Washington, D.C. area. Participants do not become employees of HHS or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.
Masters or Doctorate level degree in human or animal health and infectious diseases, biological life sciences, biomedical science/pharmaceuticals, public health, science policy, agricultural science, epidemiology, and/or microbiology earned within the past five years is required.
Experience in writing scientific publications, policy reports, and conducting in-depth research using web-based scientific libraries and research methods required.
Experience with the following is preferred (for human and/or animal issues): surveillance of antibiotic-resistant infections, prevention and/or interruption of the spread of antibiotic-resistant threats, or development of rapid diagnostics and novel treatments.
US citizenship required.
