Description

An opportunity for Post-Bachelor in Computer Science is available with the Grassland, Soil and Water Research Laboratory (GSWRL) in Temple, Texas.  As part of the research project, the selected candidate may be asked to participate in the following activities:

  • Participate as part of a team to develop and maintain databases.
  • Write and modify utility programs or other simple language.
  • Review user’s programming changes to insure that instructions and documentation are technically sufficient.
  • Check data for completeness, validity, and consistency; correct erroneous data.
  • Revise and/or update existing programs and troubleshoot systems.
  • Install software systems, update system menus, provide operational advice and assistance to users, etc.
  • Document all data files, computer programs, and procedures.
  • Advise users about security and data file access restrictions.

The position is full-time for one year and may be renewed upon recommendation of the ARS and availability of funding. The participant must show proof of health insurance.  The participant does not become an employee of ARS or ORISE.

While participants will not enter into an employment relationship with ARS, this position requires a pre-employment check and a full background investigation.

Qualifications

Eligible applicants must have received a Bachelor’s degree with experience in computer science within five years of the desired starting date.  Also desirable is training in biology or other life science.

The following skills are preferred:

  • General knowledge of computer science
  • Working knowledge of basic mathematics and data processing procedures
  • Ability to efficiently operate personal computers
  • Ability to edit data and to adapt to various spreadsheet programs
  • Ability to modify existing programs per instruction
  • Ability to manipulate databases using established software packages
  • Ability to work with others in a team environment
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing
  • Knowledge of data security requirements, practices, and maintenance procedures
