Description

A summer fellowship opportunity is available to support the Division of Applied Research and Technology (DART) within the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The participant will be offered the opportunity to train in the Engineering and Physical Hazards Branch of the CDC/NIOSH Division of Applied Research and Technology. The participant will gain experience in both office and laboratory environments by conducting research, making sound measurements, calculating efficacy of engineering noise controls, calibrating instruments and collecting and summarizing sound level data.   All participation and training will occur under the tutelage and direction of an assigned Advisor/Mentor.

**Length of Appointment: 3 months **

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for 3 months, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Cincinnati, Ohio area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

Qualifications

Any candidates with recent degrees (within the past 5 years or 60 months), or currently seeking a degree, in the following fields may apply:

• Occupational Safety and Health

• Industrial Hygiene

• Noise Control Engineering

• Audiology

• General Engineering

• Physics

• Health Communications

 

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate the following preferred skills/experience:

• An ability to work independently on complex projects.

• Clear, concise writing abilities aimed at a wide variety of audiences - from various worker     populations to fellow researchers.

• Experience in evaluating workplace noise hazards and evaluating appropriate controls.

  • Degree: Associate's Degree, Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree, or Doctoral Degree received within the last 60 month(s).
