Description

Two fellowship opportunities are currently available in the Office of the Chief Medical Officer, within the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) in Washington, DC.

The Chief Medical Officer serves as the primary medical advisor to the Assistant Secretary for Health on the development and implementation of HHS-wide public health policy recommendations.

The fellow may have the opportunity to be involved in the following activities:

  • Assisting the Mentor (project lead) who provides leadership for planning, developing, and implementing extremely complex, national-level public health projects.
  • Conducting background searches for project team objectives.
  • Tracking public health data to be utilized in opioid initiatives.
  • Analyzing quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Developing written products and oral presentation materials for a variety of initiatives related to opioids, pain, behavioral health, and the social sciences.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and HHS. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of HHS contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at HHS in the Washington, DC, area. Participants do not become employees of HHS, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

Qualifications

Applicants must possess a Masters or Doctorate degree in Public Health or in the area of health sciences within the last five years.

Applicants should be familiar with health-related issues and ideally would be interested the area of acute and chronic pain, addiction, substance use, and/or mental health.  The applicants will be involved with the priority issue of policy, related to opioids and pain.

  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with colleagues and leadership
  • Ability to manage multiple complex tasks
  • Strong knowledge in all Microsoft Office programs
  • Ease with social media platforms and public relations
  • Identify problems and recommend solutions
  • Develop quality products in a timely fashion
Eligibility Requirements
  • Citizenship: U.S. Citizen Only
  • Degree: Master's Degree or Doctoral Degree received within the last 60 month(s).
