Description

A fellowship opportunity is available to support the Division of Surveillance, Hazard Evaluations, and Field Studies (DSHEFS), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in Cincinnati, Ohio.

NIOSH produces new scientific knowledge and provides practical solutions vital to reducing risks of injury and death in traditional industries, such as agriculture, construction, and mining. NIOSH also supports research to predict, prevent, and address emerging problems that arise from dramatic changes in the 21st Century workplace and workforce. NIOSH and its partners support U.S. economic strength and growth by moving research into practice through concrete and practical solutions, recommendations, and interventions for the building of a healthy, safe and capable workforce.

NIOSH is currently recruiting for a student studying industrial hygiene or a related field with a knowledge of exposure assessment. The fellowship opportunity includes collaborating with research epidemiologists and industrial hygienists on occupational health studies.  Some travel may be required for field data collection.

Specific activities may include:

• Assisting in the development of sampling methods for industrial hygiene studies on exposures to wildland firefighters and nanomaterial workers.

• Organizing and support industrial hygiene sampling and exposure assessment field studies,

• Assisting with the development of exposure assessment study protocols,

• Participating in field surveys to collect air, dermal and biological samples from workers in diverse occupational settings, data analysis, report writing, and abstracting data from reports to create exposure databases

• Assisting with writing scientific manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed journals.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for 3 months (10 weeks), but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The desired start date is June 4, 2018.  The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Cincinnati, Ohio area. Participants do not become employees of the CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

Qualifications

• Undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in occupational health, industrial hygiene, and general or environmental public health, or a related field at an accredited U.S. college or university are encouraged to apply. Undergraduate students must be enrolled in upper-level (junior or senior) courses.

• Knowledge and experience analyzing data from human studies, surveys, questionnaires, literature resources, or databases is desired.

• Or related job experience assisting with conduct of epidemiology and/or industrial hygiene studies.

The successful applicant will be working towards a Bachelor's, Master's or PhD degree in industrial hygiene or related field with a solid educational background in some, or all, of the following disciplines: exposure assessment, toxicology, risk assessment, biochemistry, and statistics. In addition, applicants should have a working knowledge of databases/spreadsheets (R, SAS, Excel, Access, etc.).  Experience in industrial hygiene and exposure assessment sampling methodologies is desirable.
