A fellowship opportunity is available to support the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in Morgantown, West Virginia.
The participant will train with NIOSH statisticians and toxicologists to learn statistical methods, tools, and platforms for compiling large databases and assessing data quality. These scientific data are needed for occupational health research and quantitative risk assessment. Data sets include experimental data from toxicology and material science research on engineered nanomaterials. The participating student will also have the opportunity to explore data analysis tools and software for summarizing and visualizing data, and to present findings to fellow students and NIOSH researchers.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for 2 ½ months, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The desired start date is May 21, 2018. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Morgantown, West Virginia, area. Participants do not become employees of the CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
Applicant must be a recent graduate (Bachelor's degree or higher) or be currently enrolled as a graduate student at an accredited U.S. college or university in science and mathematics fields including bioinformatics, biostatistics, computational biology, toxicology, epidemiology, statistics, engineering, chemistry, environmental health, data management, computer science, or information science and technology.
Course work and/or research experience in experimental design, biostatistics, bioinformatics, biology, toxicology, information technology, computer science, and related fields would be favorable.Data development and data analysis skills and experience are preferred.Courses and/or experience using data management and statistical computing software such as Excel, R, SAS, and/or Matlab would be useful.
