Description

An immediate opening is available for a fellowship position based at the Food and Drug Administration, Office of Foods and Veterinary Medicine, which is located at campuses in White Oak and College Park, MD. The fellow will have the opportunity to learn from FVM's Strategic Communications and Public Engagement (SCOPE) leadership about consumer-focused communication aimed at the public, media, and stakeholders on scientific, public health, and safety issues. On a routine basis, the fellow will also interact with public health officials and communications teams across the agency as well as relevant offices at the Centers for Disease Control and/or other government agencies responsible for inter-agency coordination.

The fellow will have the opportunity to learn from SCOPE leadership to understand, track, and ultimately develop consumer-focused communication aimed at the public, media, and stakeholders on existing or potential threats to public health. They will also interact on a regular basis with public health officials who are using the latest science and technology; interact with SCOPE counterparts at the Centers for Disease Control and/or other government agencies who are responsible for inter-agency coordination.

Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will learn about real world risk communications, the importance of timely engagement with stakeholders and the public, as well as the daily challenges involved in public health communication. The participant will be directly involved in discussions with SCOPE leads about significant public health and safety issues. They will gain valuable knowledge on how to communicate in complicated and sensitive situations where science and communications converge. The participant will be engaged in range of activities, such as:

•Participating in discussions about various food safety, nutrition, cosmetics, dietary supplements, and other issues.
•Conducting research into topics, such as food recalls or outbreaks.
•Writing and producing  materials, such as web pages, fact sheets, and  presentations.
•Learning how to develop resources and tools to enhance risk communication.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and FDA. The initial appointment is available through November 7, 2018, but may be renewed upon recommendation of FDA contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at FDA in the Silver Spring and College Park, Maryland area. Participants do not become employees of FDA or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.

The Homeland Security Presidential Directive-12 (HSPD-12) mandates a background check be completed for both U.S. citizens and foreign nationals.  Foreign nationals must have resided in the U.S. for at least three (3) of the past five (5) years in order for FDA to complete a background check.

Currently pursuing a Master's degree or have received this degree within 60 months.
