An opportunity is available in the Division of Laboratory Sciences (DLS), National Center for Environmental Health, at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
DLS conducts research and provides laboratory support that improves the detection, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of environmental, tobacco-related, nutritional, newborn, selected chronic and selected infectious diseases. The Tobacco and Volatiles Branch (TVB) supports this through its own mission, which is to produce laboratory science that supports effective regulation to reduce individual and population exposure to addictive and toxic substances from tobacco products and environmental sources.
These data are a crucial source of information on potentially harmful exposures and offer many opportunities in applied statistics across multiple domains, including environmental exposure assessment, biomarkers in human tissue, complex survey data analysis, epidemiology, population health, optimization of laboratory methods, experimental design, and quality control. Participants will be encouraged to publish findings in peer-reviewed
scholarly journals.
Training will include performing regression analyses on complex survey data which use clustering and stratification, along with the development scientific manuscripts using such data. Other training will include editing statistical content in manuscripts and learning to communicate statistical concepts and results to scientists in the Tobacco and Volatiles Branch.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.
• B.S., M.S., or Ph.D., in statistics, biostatistics, mathematical sciences, epidemiology earned within the past five years
• Proficient in a major software application for statistical analysis, such as SAS, R or Stata. (Participants can expect to receive necessary training
and guidance to attain proficiency in SAS.)
